"Dale Tallon, Smith's successor, has turned the European focus to Finland. During the offseason, he signed defenseman Lasse Kukkonen and winger Tony Salmelainen to join fellow Finn Tuomo Ruutu in the Hawks' rebuilding effort. If the Hawks are to snap their seven-game losing streak and show some improvement this season, those flying Finns just might be the key to them doing it."

"The season started with the Hawks happy with young defensemen Brent Seabrook, Jim Vandermeer and Duncan Keith and hopeful that veterans Adrian Aucoin and Jassen Cullimore could avoid the injuries that curtailed their play last season. Kukkonen, who merely figured to fill out the position, has played better than them all. He earned a spot on the power play four games into the season and has six points, the most among the defensemen. He also is a plus-3; Seabrook (plus-1) is the only other defenseman on the plus side."
